Mitigation of archaeological sites
can be a costly endeavor in a pipeline company's effort to comply
with environmental regulations. Avoiding a site is often impractical
and excavating it may appear to be the only solution. Unfortunately,
these traditional mitigation measures are too often the only solutions
considered when dealing with archaeological sites. This paper discusses
traditional mitigation measures and presents an alternative strategy
to archaeological site treatment. Off-site, or off right-of-way, mitigation
is a creative mitigation alternative that can be applied to some sites
if conditions and circumstances permit. Within the body of this paper,
an example of an alternative mitigation measure utilized by Williams
