The cost of assessing, mitigating, and managing environmental issues on construction projects seems to rise with every passing year and, in some parts of the USA, has become a major issue in overall project scheduling and economics. This paper looks at the environmental compliance management experience of three long-distance, linear projects built in the United Sates between 1994 and 1999. Their stories provide valuable lessons in how to run effective environmental programs for utility construction projects. At the same time, a comparison of the projects shows that the real costs of these efforts, both financial and in terms of regulatory relationships, varied significantly.
